GUNS

ABOUT THE WORK

Bang, bang! The four giant automatic pistols suspended from the ceiling and aimed at one another were originally conceived in 1992, when David Černý provocatively announced the “Day of Killing” in London for the EDGE91 festival. One year later, in 1993, he exhibited the pistols at the Špála Gallery in Prague as part of his project Umělí (The Artificial). In the modified version of the installation, the triggers were animated and synchronized with recorded gunshots played through integrated speakers. This intensified the viewer’s sense of risk and hesitation: only the bravest chose to stand in the space between guns pointed at each other. The work was later presented in New York at Word Trade Center and many other venues David said: “Throughout my life, weapons have repeatedly appeared in my work .I have ambivalent relation to them. They are a subject that fascinates me from many perspectives. Weapons have long stood, and will likely continue to stand, at the pinnacle of human technological achievement. At the same time, they represent destructive dimension of our existence. newerless, i love technical and mechanical precision, super utility, and in many cases even beautiful and iconic design. Beside, i should quote Samuel Colt words” god creates man uneven and i fix that”
